A French window, also known as a French door is really a type of door, but one which has one or more panes of glass set into the whole length of the door, meaning it also functions as a window. In France, they are known as 'porte-fenêtre'. In Italy they are very common, usually overlooking a terrace, known as portafinestra (door-window).

These are many small windows placed into the full length of the door. These windows are sometimes called “lights.” They give minimal amount of privacy, and are basically for decoration purpose. People who are looking for ways to bring more natural light into their homes can install these windows.

Used in France in the 17th century, when electricity was not there French doors were architectural solutions which allowed natural sunlight to enter a home or room for illumination purposes. French doors are characterized by glass panels or lights that run to the full length of the door and which are held together by a frame.
